Connections
The first question that many of you may be asking is 'How did she get to go to these events?' No, I didn't donate thousands of dollars to the Democratic Party, I got in the old fashioned way: connections. Working hard didn't hurt, it gave a reason for me being given an opportunity to attend over another schlepper. I had been working as an intern at the White House from about September through the last of the campaign season and through the Christmas season. I'd like to extend a special thanks to my "connections" - - you know who you are.
Election Night 1996
There really wasn't much doubt in Washington that the Clinton/Gore ticket would prevail over the Dole/Kemp ticket in 1996. By November, it was merely a question of degree. On election night 1996, I attended a party put on for the Campaign workers, some DNC workers, some White House people.
The Inaugural Ball
I got all dressed up and went to the ball. I won't lie to you, the actual event kinda sucked. When I think ball, I normally think of beautiful, classical music. Uhhh, no. The DC Ball had the artist known as Meatloaf - perhaps the most horrible performer ever. But hey, it was a wonderful experience so I won't complain too loudly about the music.
The Inauguration Ceremony
It's always damn cold in DC in January, but the throngs of people at the Capitol building generate some heat - or at least hot air (as in the case of protesters). This too was a neat event. It's completely free to the public, so I encourage you to attend once in your life. You'll walk away feeling very patriotic.
